If you’ve recently left the workplace or have even been absent for a while and want to return to work, your best shot may be through a past employer, even if the company doesn’t have a formalized program to recruit back former staff members.

It’s a good idea to gather contact information on key company staffers, such as departmental colleagues and HR leaders, when you retire and keep in touch with them on a regular basis. That makes coming back that much easier if you do decide to return, and gives you a solid network of folks with whom you can feel out areas where there may be staffing gaps, then discuss how you could be of benefit on a part-time or contractual, freelance basis.

Be patient and considerate; it may take time to get a response, even from people you formerly worked with.

As with any reentry for older workers, stress the specific talents that you can bring to the company as well as any additional skills you’ve picked up since your departure.
